What layers to pack for an Alaska cruise

Rain gear and wet weather

Rain gear matters on an alaska cruise because wet clothing can shorten a port day quickly. a light waterproof shell is more useful than a stylish jacket that gives up after 20 minutes.

Pack these wet weather items:

• Small umbrella, if you can manage one safely
• Water-resistant day bag
• Extra socks
• Quick-dry trousers or travel pants
• Plastic or waterproof pouch for phone and documents

Ketchikan, sitka, juneau, and other coastal stops can be damp even when the forecast looks polite. i do not cancel plans because of rain in alaska. i pack for it and continue with the day.

Shoes for Alaska ports

Shoes matter more in alaska than dinner clothes. that may be the least glamorous sentence in this article, but it may save your cruise.

You need one pair of comfortable walking shoes with good grip. they should already be broken in before the trip. a wet gangway or uneven path is not the place to test new footwear.

For most alaska cruise passengers, i would bring:

• Prescription medication
• Travel insurance details
• Phone and charger
• Glasses or hearing aid supplies
• One change of clothing
• Light sweater or fleece
• Rain shell, if weather looks uncertain
• Small toiletries

Small extras that earn their place

A few small items make alaska noticeably better. not many. just the right ones.

• Compact binoculars for whales, eagles, and glacier viewing
• Sunglasses for glare on water and ice
• Lip balm
• Moisturizer or hand cream
• Portable phone charger
• Lens cloth
• Small pack of tissues
• Reusable water bottle

Binoculars are the one item i forgot once and regretted for an entire afternoon. wildlife does not approach on command. sometimes it remains a dignified distance away, as wildlife has every right to do.

I would also bring sunscreen, even for alaska. cloud cover does not mean your face is exempt from sunlight, especially on water and near ice.

Common Alaska cruise packing mistakes

The first mistake is packing as if alaska is one temperature. it is not. your suitcase should prepare you for cool mornings, wet afternoons, warm dining rooms, and windy decks.

The second mistake is bringing too much heavy clothing and not enough useful rain protection. a bulky sweater will not help much if it gets wet and stays wet.

The third mistake is forgetting that alaska ports involve surfaces. pavement, ramps, docks, gravel, wet sidewalks, and excursion paths all ask more of your shoes than the ship’s dining room does.
