Senior woman with grey hair looking surprised at cruise app showing daily charges in a ship cabin, discovering how much cruise gratuities add up over seven nights

Cruise Gratuities in 2026: What Every Senior Needs to Know Before Boarding

Beverly called me on the last morning of a holland america sailing we’d both taken out of fort lauderdale. she wasn’t angry, exactly, but she had that particular tone people get when they feel they’ve been misled.

Her onboard account showed a charge she hadn’t budgeted for: $238 in automatic gratuities for the two of them, added across seven nights. she’d seen it itemized each day in the cruise app and assumed it was a mistake. it wasn’t.

Cruise gratuities are as real as the base fare, and not knowing about them is one of the most avoidable budget surprises in cruising. i’ve paid gratuities on more than 50 voyages. i’ve prepaid them, adjusted them, and watched what happens when people don’t plan for them. here is everything you need to know before you board.

What cruise gratuities actually are

Cruise gratuities are daily service charges, typically $17 to $20 per person, charged automatically to your onboard account for every night of your sailing. some lines call them “crew appreciation.” others use “hotel service charge” or “daily service fee.” the label varies. the mechanism is the same.

The money is pooled and distributed across a wide range of crew members: your cabin steward, dining room staff, and the kitchen and laundry teams working behind the scenes who you’ll never meet. cruise lines keep the exact distribution formula largely private, but the intent is to make sure everyone who contributes to your experience receives a share, not just the staff you interact with directly.

This system exists because cruise lines, like american restaurants, pay base wages that assume tipping will supplement crew income. it’s a structure most american passengers recognize, even if the scale surprises them.

On a ship carrying 2,000 passengers each paying $18 per day, that’s $36,000 in gratuity funds generated daily. the crew rely on it. for a complete view of all the extra charges you can expect beyond your base fare, see my guide to cruise hidden fees.

Current rates by cruise line in 2026

Five major cruise lines raised their gratuity rates in the first half of 2026. if you’re working from an older article or a cruise line’s previous pricing page, the numbers have changed. here are the current figures as of may 2026.

cruise linestandard cabin (per person/night)suite (per person/night)gratuities included?
carnival$17 (from april 2, 2026)$19no
royal caribbean$18.50$21no
norwegian$20$25no
celebrity$18$23 (the retreat)no (some bundles include)
holland america$18 (from june 1, 2026)$20no
princess$18 (from march 8, 2026)$20no (princess plus bundles include)
disney$16$27.25no
viking ocean$20 (all categories)$20no
regent seven seasincluded in fareincluded in fareyes
silverseaincluded in fareincluded in fareyes

To put these numbers into human terms: a couple on a seven-night holland america sailing, in a standard balcony cabin, now pays $252 in automatic cruise gratuities, not counting any extra tipping you do in person.

That’s $18 per person per night, times two people, times seven nights. beverly’s $238 figure from our fort lauderdale sailing suddenly looks familiar.

The second layer: service charges on top

Here’s what i tell everyone who thinks they now understand gratuities: you’re not done yet. the daily per-person charge is only part of the picture. almost every mainstream cruise line adds a separate automatic percentage charge to specific categories of onboard spending.

Beverage purchases

Royal caribbean, holland america, princess, celebrity, and norwegian all add an automatic 18% to 20% service charge to every drink you buy, including bar purchases, specialty coffees, and bottled water. this applies whether you’re buying individual drinks or a drink package.

So the $12 cocktail on the menu costs you $14.16 to $14.40 at the register. holland america and princess both raised their beverage service charge from 18% to 20% in early 2026. this is not optional and cannot be removed.

Specialty dining and spa services

Specialty restaurant dinners and spa treatments carry their own automatic gratuities, typically 18% to 20% on top of the listed price. a $45 specialty dining cover charge becomes roughly $54 after the service fee.

Most cruise apps display both numbers, but the menu price is the one passengers remember. this is why i always tell people to look at the “final charge” in the app, not the menu price, when budgeting their onboard spending.

Should you prepay cruise gratuities?

Let me be direct about this. i prepay gratuities on every sailing i book. here is why.

First, several lines raised their rates during 2026. when you prepay, you lock in the rate that was current at the time of booking. carnival, holland america, and princess all increased their daily charges in the first half of this year, and guests who had prepaid before the effective date did not pay the higher rate. that saved some passengers $14 per person per cruise.

Second, prepaying gratuities removes a daily mental accounting task from your vacation. when you board knowing the gratuity bill is settled, you stop tracking it. i’ve watched travel companions obsess over the daily charge appearing in the app every morning, which is not how any of us want to spend a holiday at sea.

Third, prepaying is the simplest way to use a travel rewards credit card to cover gratuities. once you’re onboard, most people shift to their onboard account. prepaying lets you earn points on the gratuity cost at the time of booking, which is a small but genuine benefit.

One exception: if you’re sailing with a line that offers bundled packages (princess plus, norwegian’s free at sea, celebrity’s always included), gratuities are often included in those packages. in those cases, confirm the gratuity is genuinely included before prepaying separately. paying twice is an easy mistake to make when booking.

Can you remove or adjust cruise gratuities?

On most mainstream lines, yes, you can visit guest services before disembarkation and ask to have the automatic charge adjusted or removed. most lines will do this without requiring a specific reason, though they may ask.

Norwegian is the exception. they require a formal reimbursement request after the cruise ends, rather than an onboard adjustment.

I want to be honest with you about what removal means in practice. the crew has access to the list of passengers who have opted out of automatic gratuities. on a cruise critic galley tour, a member reported seeing this list posted in a visible location below decks.

Whether or not individual staff members check it daily, the money they expect from the pooled system does not arrive when passengers opt out. many cruise crew members earn modest base wages and depend on gratuities to make their contracts worthwhile. i’ve never removed gratuities, and i have no plan to start.

If you had genuinely poor service, the right response is to report it to guest services during the cruise, not to remove gratuities at the end. most lines will make an effort to fix problems if you raise them while still onboard.

Removing gratuities after the fact punishes everyone in the crew pool, including the staff who served you well.

If you’d prefer to tip in cash and handle it personally, that’s a reasonable preference. but if you go that route, pay individual crew members what the automatic charge would have covered, or more. don’t use cash tipping as a mechanism for paying less overall.

Arthur’s verdict

Cruise gratuities are not a scam, a hidden fee, or a recent invention. they are the standard service compensation structure in the american cruise industry, and they have been for decades.

What changes every year or two is the daily rate, and 2026 has seen more increases than usual, with five major lines raising charges in the first five months of the year.

My recommendation for every senior cruiser is to treat gratuities as part of the base cost from the moment you start budgeting. add $18 to $20 per person per day, multiply by the length of the sailing, and include that number in your initial budget. then prepay before you board.

You’ll have one less thing to think about when you’re standing at the pool bar deciding whether to order a second coffee.

If you want a gratuity-free experience where everything is settled before you board, luxury all-inclusive lines like regent seven seas and silversea include gratuities in their fares. you’ll pay more upfront, but the total cost when you run the numbers is often closer to a mainstream line than people expect, especially once you add back all the extras that mainstream lines charge separately.

Questions i’m often asked

Do gratuities apply to children on cruises?

Yes, on most major lines, automatic gratuities apply to all guests including children, with some exceptions for very young children. carnival does not charge gratuities for children under two. disney charges the full daily rate for children in regular cabins.

Msc reduces the rate for children ages two to 11 on caribbean itineraries. if you’re sailing with grandchildren, check the specific policy for your line and itinerary so you’re not surprised by the per-guest count on disembarkation day.

Are gratuities included in all-inclusive cruise fares?

On luxury lines like regent seven seas, silversea, seabourn, and azamara, yes, gratuities are included in the cruise fare. on mainstream lines, gratuities are almost always extra unless you book a specific bundled package.

Princess plus, norwegian’s free at sea, and celebrity’s always included bundles do incorporate gratuities, but you need to confirm this at booking rather than assuming. viking ocean, despite being premium-priced, charges a separate $20 per person per day gratuity as of january 2026.

What’s the difference between automatic gratuities and the service charge on my drink?

They are separate charges. the daily automatic gratuity covers your cabin service, dining room staff, and back-of-house crew. the 18% to 20% service charge added to beverages, specialty dining, and spa services is an additional percentage on top of each purchase.

So on a mainstream line, you can expect both a daily flat charge and a percentage added to discretionary spending. they go to different parts of the crew compensation pool, though both ultimately benefit the ship’s staff.

Should i tip extra on top of automatic gratuities?

The automatic charge is designed to be sufficient. you’re not obligated to tip beyond it. that said, if a particular crew member genuinely went out of their way for you, a personal cash tip at the end of the cruise is always appreciated and appropriate.

I typically give an extra $20 to my cabin steward on longer voyages when the service has been exceptional. on a short three-night cruise, i usually just let the automatic system do its job.

Can i use onboard credit to pay gratuities?

If you don’t prepay and let the gratuities post to your onboard account daily, yes, onboard credit can often be applied to cover them. this is actually a good reason not to prepay in some cases, particularly if you have substantial onboard credit from a booking promotion.

Check with your cruise line before sailing, because the policy varies, and some lines restrict onboard credit to discretionary purchases only. if you’re unsure, ask at the time of booking rather than discovering the limitation at guest services on day one.

Final thoughts

Cruise gratuities are not a surprise if you know they’re coming. budget $18 to $20 per person per night from the first day of planning, decide early whether you want to prepay, and then stop thinking about them.

The crew works long hours in a small space to make sure your voyage runs smoothly. that $18 a day is not the worst money you’ll spend on the trip, and it’s some of the most direct benefit to people who genuinely earn it.

Beverly, for what it’s worth, went back to guest services on that fort lauderdale sailing and left the charge in place. she told me the room steward had been exceptional all week. she was right.
